The current town government is destroying Edgewood. Residential areas are being rezoned as commercial while existing commercial space remains empty. Zoning has become a checkerboard. The current council, mayor and zoning commission have done nothing positive for this town. Crime is rampant (no police department), blight is everywhere (despite an ordinance) and businesses can't survive.

** Comment as posted elsewhere on citytowninfo.com **

Socorro, New Mexico has a severe drug problem. Coming from a large city, I didn't think such a problem can exist in a small town. Some of the town officials have been caught drinking and driving, using drugs or just possesion. People of are very rude towards members of cultures not common to the south wester region (ie. Dark skinned latin or black or oriental ). If you are a student at the New Mexico Institute of mining and Technology, I highly recommend studying hard and living on campus. The locals of the town usually poorly educated. Because of this they are envious of your accomplishments and feel that you are trying to be better than they are. As a result, they can become socially or sometimes physically hostile.

** Comment as posted elsewhere on citytowninfo.com **

Oh my goodness....
if the police department is any reflection of the population, this town is definitely a place to avoid.
My daughter left her purse in the McDonald's on the way to a ski trip on the 21st of December. They were going to try to pick it up on their way home the 24th but were told that McDonald's would be closing early. So we called the local police department and asked if they could just pick it up and keep it in lockup until the 24th. They assured us they would. End of story?? No. Just after that conversation, we called back to make sure they'd found it. We were told then that the dispatch department would be closed on the 24th and they'd decided to let the officer just KEEP the purse until the 24th. They asked us to call when she got to town and they'd give us directions on how to find the police station to pick it up. On the 24th, when my daughter got into Espanola she called, only to discover that no one on duty had any clue about a lost purse. After several phone calls - of course no one knew anything... we finally found it. Unfortunately, the bus full of people couldn't hang out and wait so they were already out of town. Finally, the 911 Coordinator - in charge of this department, and as far as I can tell - the only person with an ounce of common sense of the 6-7 people I talked to - admitted that the whole incident was handled incorrectly and out of their policy procedures. She apologized profusely and said she'd make sure it was sent to us asap. Fast forward to the 26th. I called to see if the purse had been shipped out, and was once again in conversation with several incompetent phone handlers. Of course, they were quick to tell me that it was all our fault and not their jobs, etc... and that they'd be shipping the bag to me - COD. Listen if you are so inclined - Espanola is the place to rob a bank! Barney Fife has more going on than the officers and staff I've had to deal with!! AND HE'S DEAD!!!
