The leader of this group was Colonel VJ Shipman, who had a son-in-law, William Lawtey, after whom the city was
named for.
In 1885, Lawtey had a population of about 250. A schoolhouse was present as were several stores. Orange groves were
present and oranges were a main crop until sometime when strawberries took over. Strawberries remained the main crop
until the Depression hit. Soon after, it seems, Lawtey's economy died and the town never recovered.
