Socorro, New Mexico has a severe drug problem. Coming from a large city, I didn't think such a problem can exist in a small town. Some of the town officials have been caught drinking and driving, using drugs or just possesion. People of are very rude towards members of cultures not common to the south wester region (ie. Dark skinned latin or black or oriental ). If you are a student at the New Mexico Institute of mining and Technology, I highly recommend studying hard and living on campus. The locals of the town usually poorly educated. Because of this they are envious of your accomplishments and feel that you are trying to be better than they are. As a result, they can become socially or sometimes physically hostile.
